The Wall
“The Wall” refers to the main page on your profile where you will see your newsfeed, message notifications, recent activity, etc. The wall will show the messages that you and your friends post, and the comments that follow. The first field on your wall is the Newsfeed. This is where you can share pics, video, and links to all the people on your friends list, or just the ones you select. Keep in mind that this is a fairly public area, depending on how tight your privacy settings are. So use discretion. To send a more private message to one or a select group of friends use the “message” feature to choose just the people you want to reach.
Friends Lists
In order to add someone to your friends list they must confirm you first. This keeps people you don’t want from having access to your Facebook from seeing it. To find new friends you can search by name, location, or school. You can also find friends by searching the friend lists of your existing friends. Facebook will also automatically suggest friends for you based on mutual connections. You can also use friends lists to manage your privacy better. We recommend that you create separate friend lists and adjust your privacy settings for each one accordingly. For instance you can create one list for close friends and share just about anything with that list, create a second list for your family, and leave them out of the “photos I’m tagged in” setting if your BFF is likely to post that pic of you barfing after your last bash, and create a third list for professional contacts where you would probably want to limit your colleagues exposure to your relationship status updates and those iffy photos.
Events
Facebook’s events feature is an easy way to get friends together, plan a party, or gather a crowd for an event. Just fill in the event information and use your friends list to send to out your invitations with the click of a button.
Games
Games like Farmville and Mafia Wars are extremely popular on Facebook. You should be warned however that these applications can in some cases expose you to on onslaught of malware and crooks looking to steal your personal information. If you must use these application be aware that bugging your friends with your gaming habits by sending them unsolicited invitations, updates, and “gifts” really just makes you a big pain in the ass and will likely get you blocked by the very people you are trying to reach out to. So in short, if you must play, make sure your anti-virus software is up-to-date and active, and only play with others that have expressly invited you to do so.
